Overview

With the stated aim of shaping Brisbane as Australia’s New World City, the City Council of Brisbane has placed planning, design, transport and sustainability at the forefront of an ambitious City building agenda. Spend an evening with Chris Bain, one of Brisbane City Council’s senior urban planners, who will present how the Brisbane City Council is leading the transformation of Australia’s third largest City. Chris will talk about: * The City’s performance based planning system and risk tolerant approach to development * The integration of planning activities, with strong co-ordination between regional planning, city-wide planning and neighbourhood planning * The growth challenge and how the City is planning to accommodate over 150 000 new homes in 20 years * A $4 billion dollar urban renewal program that has lead to a downtown and inner City renaissance > Extensive urban design and public program, including the rebuilding of the City’s premier public civic, commercial and cultural places * The influence of sub-tropical design principles in celebrating the City’s unique sense of place * The multi-billion dollar transport program that together has seen the creation of one of the world’s premier busway networks and the first steps towards a largely underground orbital road network * The multi-billion dollar future transport program that will see the creation of a new underground central rail station and a metro rail network * The City’s emerging sustainability initiatives, including its pledge to be a carbon neutral city within 20 years * The successes and challenges from the City’s award winning community engagement program. With a workforce of close to 10 0000, the Brisbane City Council is the planning authority for a City of over 2 million residents. Chris Bain is a senior urban planner with 10 years experience in urban planning, both in the private and public sector. Chris has worked for the past 4 years with the Brisbane City Council in a variety of roles, ranging from the master planning of new greenfield communities to comprehensive inner City renewal. Chris now manages part of the City’s Urban Renewal portfolio, and is well placed to talk about the City’s initiatives, including its' successes and learning experiences. Comments: Talk to be followed by an open discussion and social event at the Larchmont Grill, which is located one block from RCH Studios
