The City of Delray Beach in partnership with the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council, Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, Treasure Coast Section of the Florida American Planning Association, Florida Atlantic University School of Urban and Regional Planning, Palm Beach County Planning Congress, Inc., Abacoa Partnership For Community, and Delray Beach Downtown Development Authority has initiated a public education lecture series for planners, residents and visitors of the Region. The series is intended to focus on town planning, urban design, historic preservation, and the changing demographic and market trends that will affect and influence the long-term health and redevelopment of cities. This public education lecture series will showcase six distinguished speakers. The series is scheduled from December 2013 through May 2014. The second lecture in the series will be presented by Victor Dover addressing practical lessons in the fine art of street design for making “complete streets” and walkable places. An historical account, using examples of streets from this country and around the world will be provided illustrating how streets and street design has changed and the impact this has had on our cities, towns, and society. Street design will be examined at every scale providing useful examples with an emphasis on how to establish a diverse and interconnected network of streets designed to encourage walking, transit ridership, a reduction in the number and length of automobile trips, and conservation of energy. A portion of the program will be dedicated to how to knit together the street, block, and building (public and private realm) to establish a network of streets, public spaces, and built environment for healthier commerce, living, and shared use. Finally, the program will illustrate how the street and street network is the foundation for all great cities and towns and why it is so important for planners to be knowledgeable and skilled in the science and art of street design.
