Overview

The City of Delray Beach in partnership with the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council, Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, Treasure Coast Section of the Florida American Planning Association, Florida Atlantic University School of Urban and Regional Planning, Palm Beach County Planning Congress, Inc., Abacoa Partnership For Community, and Delray Beach Downtown Development Authority has initiated a public education lecture series for planners, residents and visitors of the Region. The series is intended to focus on town planning, urban design, historic preservation, and the changing demographic and market trends that will affect and influence the long-term health and redevelopment of cities. This public education lecture series will showcase six distinguished speakers. The series is scheduled from December 2013 through May 2014. The Third lecture in the series will feature Leigh Gallagher discussing the most significant trend to hit our housing market and American way of life in decades: a shift away from the suburban lifestyle as the American Dream. In an entertaining discussion of how and why the American suburbs "jumped the shark," Gallagher details both the many ways this new, significant shift is being manifested, from the movement of homeowners, retailers and corporate interests; rapidly evolving demographics of our country; changing preferences of millennials; and unexpected reversals in economic prosperity. She also paints a surprising picture of where people are going and how our housing market is rapidly adapting to meet the needs of the new American Dream(s). The presentation will assist planners, elected officials and the private sector by focusing on where housing and development trends may be headed in the 21st century and how cities will have an important role to play in meeting future housing demands.
