This presentation addresses the opportunity of enhancing the design of urban spaces and creating a sense of place through public art, beyond the traditional program of “art in public places.” The session is offered by an experienced urban planner who created a design program for public officials at Florida Atlantic University and who also is an artist. The merger of the two fields came when she was asked to create a ½ day program for artists on the elements of urban design and how they could integrate art into design. The result is a collection from around the world of crazy ideas, from a “sea organ” (the engineers love it) to silly painted penguins sliding down a mundane hand rail to a “musical road.” The intent is to stir your imagination, to broaden your perceptions and ultimately to make the world a prettier and more fun place. The purpose is to inspire planners to see possibilities of connecting with the local art community and using the creative energies of artists to make their communities more attractive and unique.
