This session will provide an overview of the nexus between public health and planning and ways in which multi-sector efforts in Orange County can support the development of healthy communities. Planners will learn how physical and social environments can directly affect the health of a community, as well as a person’s ability to choose healthy behaviors. The diverse panel of speakers will provide an overview of current national and state healthy community initiatives, including APA National efforts. Planners will learn about existing partnerships between the County of Orange and local cities and the FIT Cities Initiative to reduce obesity rates countywide. Panelists from the City of San Clemente will share how their City is addressing healthy communities from multiple angles. They will highlight the San Clemente HEAL (Healthy Eating Active Living) Cities initiatives, grassroots neighborhood projects and community grants, and the recently adopted Mobility and Complete Streets Element / Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. The remainder of the session will be a dialogue between the panel and attendees to generate ideas about how planners in Orange County can become more engaged in healthy communities planning.
