Recent TOD projects have tended to cater to young professionals and empty nesters as the strongest market segments for transit-oriented housing. However, transit-dependent family households with lower incomes value transit access even more for its convenience and ability to reduce household transportation costs. Creative local governments throughout the US are turning to transit-oriented development as a key source of affordable housing, thereby addressing housing needs and transportation costs simultaneously. This panel session examines key financial, regulatory, policy, political and community challenges and successes in some of the most innovative TOD projects around the country, focusing on best practices and lessons learned.
