Israel is located in an area prone to earthquakes, astride the Syrian-African fault line, and is at high risk of strong and devastating earthquakes. One of the real problems in disaster risk management, especially earthquake preparation, lies in private homes. The problem is not unique to Israel, and is similar to that faced by other urban areas and countries. In a global first, the Israeli government instituted a privately financed disaster risk reduction policy to address the risk posed by earthquakes to privately owned buildings.
