Broward APA met with key representatives of the FLL Airport. We were given an educational session with an overview of all current construction projects, the new runway expansion, and a discussion on economic impacts, design guidelines, public art investments, and planning aspects of how these airport projects fulfill goals and objectives of the Cities of Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale and Broward County. Speakers for the event included 1) Allan Siegel, FLL Airport Community Outreach Coordinator; 2) Tim Gallagher, Keith & Associates Project Manager; and, 3) Scarlet Hammons, Broward County Aviation’s Principal Planner. The first portion of the event included a tour of the newly built FLL maintenance building. Broward APA members met with Tim Gallagher, Keith & Associates, who is the Project Manager for the construction management of the facility. Members learned about the LEED certification process, coordination between local and federal agencies, and design standards used for the design, construction and maintenance of the facility. We toured the entire facility. From there, members toured the airport and heard from Allan Siegel and Scarlet Hammons on recent, current and programmed construction projects on Terminal Drive and throughout the facility, noise mitigation strategies within adjacent neighborhoods that were affected from the recent airport expansion, the planned mixes of uses to better support shopping as well as future light rail connecting the airport to regional commuter rail. The group also toured the car rental building and got a bird’s eye view of the new South Runway and entire FLL Airport.
