Overview

The Balboa Park – Plan to Hike event, led by Vicki Estrada, FASLA, of Estrada Land Planning and author of the Balboa Park Master Plan, will focus on the history of Balboa Park, planning trends over the park’s history, key elements of the Balboa Park Master Plan, and on-site exploration of precise planning areas of the park. Key planning elements of the park, such as land use, circulation, parking studies, historic preservation requirements, water and energy conservation, operational management of the park itself, and amendments to the master plan since its adoption will be discussed and explored on foot, as we hike through Balboa Park. As a group, we will study existing planning areas, the history of their development, and proposed projects throughout Balboa Park. To highlight, we will be hiking to the following sites within Balboa Park: •Central Mesa Precise Plan (including the Aerospace Historical Center, Starlight Bowl, and the original cactus garden), •The House of Pacific Relations and the International Cottages, •The Prado, •The Plaza de Panama, •The Cabrillo Bridge and potential development of the Centennial Bridge, •The Old Globe Way Enhancements and the integration of the Zoo Parking Structure, •Various gardens, including the Cactus, Rose, Butterfly and Japanese gardens, •Adjacent planning issues affected by the San Diego Zoo and proposed new entry and parking features, •Florida Canyon Native Plant Preserve, and •Planning history and proposed uses of the Arizona Landfill. The event will begin with a 30 minute discussion/presentation led by Vicki, followed by a hike through the Balboa Park walkways and trail systems. The hike will include intermittent discussions throughout to focus on key planning aspects of the park. We will finish the hike around 11:30 a.m. to have a picnic lunch.
