The 2015 Solar Decathlon Competition in Irvine, California, fostered a collaborative environment where students from universities across the United States and abroad partnered with architects, engineers, planners, contractors, and other professionals in the residential construction industry to build net-positive energy homes that demonstrate the latest in green building technologies.  Team Orange County competed in the event as the only local team with a home that was inspired by California’s state flower, the Golden Poppy.  During this program, four of Team Orange County’s project leaders will discuss their experience in the competition, the green building features of their competition entry, Casa Del Sol, and opine on how the green building features integrated into Casa Del Sol can be applied to future residential developments.  Planners have always played a key role in navigating housing needs and promoting sustainability, and this program will offer a case study of how the two can be successfully integrated.
