Public Health Officers and Planning Directors/Managers from a 7 county region will convene to discuss how and where they can work together to integrate health into planning. Evidence and education on this topic is well established but barriers exist that have prevented implementation and collaboration. Speakers will discuss why working together is important, new partners and initiatives integrating planning into healthy communities will be discussed as well as why it’s important to do this now. The San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank has been making community development investments and will discuss how they are bringing health together with community development. Examples of financing vehicles for healthy development will be provided. The Governor’s Office of Planning and Research will give an update on the many initiatives underway in California where Planning and Health need to be working together; such as the new General Plan Guidelines, Safeguarding California Action Plan and Climate Adaptation legislation adopted in 2015. A facilitated discussion with attendees will be included to: identify where are there opportunities for public health and planning departments to collaborate, what are the shared outcomes that public health and planning have in common-even if their more immediate goals are different, and what would Planning Directors and Health Officers like to see as follow-up activities that would help build their capacity to work together. Time to meet will be provided to begin forming relationships and identifying one or two areas where working together can occur.
