As planners, we have an obligation to be up-to-date on the most recent and important legislation affecting our work. In California, new requirements incorporated into Government Code Section 65302 (g) affecting General Plan Safety Elements have occurred over the past several years. These new requirements were adopted by the legislature through the following bills: AB 2140, AB 162, SB 1241, and SB379, which require communities to address flooding hazards, wildfire hazards, and hazard mitigation, climate adaptation and resiliency within the General Plan.
This workshop will summarize the recent OPR recommended guidance released to address the latest regulations, provide an overview of what a Safety Element is required to cover and summarize Cal FIRE requirements through the State Fire Marshal Office’s Land Use Planning Program.
Upon completion of the session, attendees, will be able to assess their own Safety Elements and determine which portions of the regulations are missing in their own plans.
