Overview

he Regional Planning and Redevelopment course concentrates on a regional approach to the redevelopment of transit-oriented development (TOD) assets.  The course combines elements of the Redevelopment Planning Law course and the Comprehensive Real Estate Development course to create a two-day, regional-focused redevelopment workshop.  The workshop focuses on both municipal-led and private-sector driven, TOD projects in the municipalities of Fanwood, Plainfield, Cranford and Westfield in Union County, New Jersey.  The workshop focuses on each city’s unique assets and the strengths of the geographic region, and how their individual projects are part of a larger, but organic, strategy to create walkable communities.

Course attendees will take a guided bus tour of this region to view the development sites and participate in detailed discussions on the challenges and opportunities encountered with each project.  The course will include discussion on each city’s redevelopment plan and the redeveloper’s designation for their respective TOD project.   Participants will also benefit from discussions on each city’s approach around eminent domain, relocation and environmental issues.  The course will also delve into all aspects of the real estate development process using Fanwood’s mixed-use TOD project as the primary case study, and how it fits within a regional strategy around smart growth.

The workshop will feature a faculty of city’s officials from Fanwood, Plainfield, Cranford and Westfield, and real estate consultants and practitioners on the Fanwood project.  By examining these projects, participants can expect to gain a deeper understanding of the different strategies, collaborations and opportunities for a regional approach toward the implementation of a transit-oriented development project.
