Overview

Montclair Center is a historic suburban commercial district, which is home to many upscale restaurants and boutiques near the center of town. In 2015, Montclair won the Great American Main Street Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Join us as we explore the historic and ongoing development of a great suburban success story and a model for main street communities across the nation. The tour will meet at the Six Corners intersection on Church Street in front of the Simit House Bakery.

 

Learning Objective 1:

 

At the end of this course, participants will understand the principals of town planning and traditional design that foster vibrant, activated mixed-use main streets and pedestrian-friendly, transit oriented development.

 

Learning Objective 2:

 

At the end of this course, participants will be able to relate social, economic and historic events to changes in development and design;

 

Learning Objective 3:

 

At the end of this course, participants will be able to better compare and contrast architectural principles of contextualism, preservation, restoration, renovation, and adaptive reuse; and

 

Learning Objective 4:

 

At the end of this course, participants will be able to discuss how best practices of successful main street development are being incorporated into modern large-scale redevelopment projects.
