This session will provide participants with basic principles and tools to address conflict management in the planning profession. The presenter will first focus on the key principles for project success, including defining project success, identifying areas of potential challenge, solid document preparation, overcoming barriers, participatory approaches and techniques to reach yes, ground rules for productive deliberation, acknowledge and legitimize (ALDDD tool), and planning guidelines for successful negotiating, with a focus on interests, not positions. The participants will also engage in a simulated role play to further learn how to apply the principles. This session is supported by the California Planning Roundtable (CPR). Planners attending this program will learn how to:
Engage in interest-based negotiation, rather than position-based.
Focus on active listening.
Use the ALDDD Tool (Acknowledge and Legitimate, then Deal, Defer, or Delegate).
