You'll learn about:

  • Various strategies being used to promote regional planning, environmental sustainability and the continued efforts to clean up the Hudson River.

  • State, regional, county, and local polices that help protect rural character and open spaces.

  • State, regional, and county level policies, incentives and partnerships that are promoting a renaissance in local agriculture and a growing local agriculture economy.

  • New ideas through success stories from farmers and entrepreneurs.

Discover the Hudson River Valley during a scenic train ride along the Hudson River. Along the way, National Park Service "trails and rails" docents will provide interpretation of the region’s history.   Regional planners will discuss the roots of the environmental protections we enjoy today and contemporary watershed and regional planning strategies within New York State’s home rule context.  At Beacon, the group will board a coach bus and begin a tour of at least three farms and value-added operations to showcase success stories of the local agricultural renaissance and foodshed preservation efforts.  Presentations by county planners, cooperative extension leaders, local and regional land trust representatives, and farmers will be made at the various stops along with lessons learned and success stories of the partnerships to preserve the landscape, keep land in farming, and grow the local agriculture economy. Tour will also include lunch and samplings of a variety of locally sourced products. This mobile workshop will be sponsored by APA’s Small Town and Rural Division.
