Just two decades ago Asbury Park was known as a blight on the Jersey shore despite its location on the ocean and home to Bruce Springsteen.  Homes were boarded up, commercial spaces were vacant and beaches were empty.  Now known as “Brooklyn by the sea”, great revitalization has been happening in this beachfront community and not just at the beachfront.  Walk through three parts of the city and see three different stages of revitalization and redevelopment. The tour begins on the west side, home to the 1970 civil disturbance, where the city still owns large vacant parcels, but where three major residential projects will commence construction.  We will tour Interfaith Partners Kula Café and gardens and a new city park.  We will continue down the commercial spine of the City, Cookman Avenue, and talk to commercial, residential, and music venue developers. We will stop for lunch at one of the city's excellent restaurants that is part of its vibrant dining scene. Finally, we shall walk to the oceanfront where we will learn about boardwalk and waterfront revitalization where music and branding plays a large part of its revitalization.
