Want to get involved in a real planning effort while in NYC for the conference?

The annual Community Planning Workshop, sponsored by APA's professional institute AICP, will take planners this year to Howard Beach in Queens. The storm surge of Hurricane Sandy caused flood damage to nearly every home in this low-lying neighborhood and cut power to the area for over three weeks. Recovery has been successful in many ways, but that effort continues, as well as taking measures to increase resiliency for future events.

APA is partnering with IBTS (Institute for Building Technology & Safety), which has managed much of the area's recovery work, to organize a half-day workshop with local stakeholders to focus on green infrastructure design and implementation as a sustainable water management strategy to plan for reduced environmental impacts and increase neighborhood resiliency.

We are looking especially for planners and other professionals with experience in hazards planning, green infrastructure, water management, and other skills that will lend themselves to helping this community develop creative and effective solutions.
