group at World Heritage Convention

UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova visited Independence Hall in Philadelphia on March 15, 2012, to begin a year-long celebration of the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention.

APA's Director of Outreach and International Programs, Jeff Soule, FAICP, was invited to join the pre-roundtable site visit with Director-General Bokova and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar.

Following the Town Hall meeting, Soule joined Bokova, U.S. National Park Service Director John Jarvis, and others for a private lunch discussion, sponsored by the U.S. Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and ICOMOS are long standing allies of APA in heritage conservation efforts, domestic as well as international. The current chair of the U.S. Committee is George Skarmeas, AICP, of Philadelphia.

APA 2012 National Planning Conference in Los Angeles will feature a session on the recently adopted UNESCO recommendation on managing Historic Urban Landscapes.
