2009 Great Streets Media Coverage
President Clinton Avenue • Little Rock, Arkansas
"President Clinton Avenue has developed from a forgotten district of abandoned warehouses into a vibrant social hub of our community," Mayor Mark Stodola said. "In a picturesque and walkable setting, President Clinton Avenue has become the lynchpin of a district that includes a major tourist attraction, an acclaimed lecture series, the farmers' market and an array of restaurants, musical venues and museums."
Front Street • Bath, Maine
"[APA] said Front Street is one of Maine's 'architectural treasures,' permeated by the city's shipbuilding and maritime tradition. Bath was the only place in New England named to the list of great streets."
South Main Street • Ann Arbor, Michigan
"I'm enormously proud — we all are," Pollay said. "Our Main Street is an absolute centerpiece of our community and to have it cited nationwide as one of the great streets is a source of enormous pride and something that we've all known about and now it's great that others are finding out about it as well."
Front Street • Traverse City, Michigan
"To celebrate Traverse City's award, the city's planning director, Russell Soyring, presented Traverse City Mayor Michael Estes with a plaque from the American Planning Association at a gathering on the corner of Front Street and Cass on Wednesday morning October 7th. Brian Crough, Community Development Director, then presented the Mayor with a 'Great' street sign, to add to the Front Street signs—and an invitation to install the first one. The mayor climbed the ladder with Crough holding it steady and placed the word "Great" over Front Street on the corner street sign, all accompanied by cheers from the crowd that had gathered for the occasion—including our large group from MyNorth Media."
Haddon Avenue • Collingswood, New Jersey
"It's extremely flattering to get national recognition for our downtown," Collingswood Mayor Jim Maley said. Maley said borough officials had no idea Collingswood was in the running until last month, when he received a letter from APA saying Haddon Avenue was being considered for the designation. "That's a really big deal and one we didn't even know about," Maley said. "It was completely out of the blue."
Main Street • Greenville, South Carolina
"Find out why the American Planning Association (APA) selected Main Street as one of 10 Great Streets for 2009 by APA's Great Places in America program."
Duke of Gloucester Street • Williamsburg, Virginia
"Duke of Gloucester Street in Williamsburg was recognized as a Great Street. [APA] says the street is an authentic recreation of the 'great street' of Virginia's 18th century capital."
North Main Street • Wheeling, West Virginia
"David Morley, research associate for the American Planning Association, said once the organization recognizes a street or area as one of the 'Great Places in America,' that place retains the title forever. 'This is an ongoing designation. ... It will continue to be recognized as a great street,' he said of North Main Street."
East Newberry Boulevard • Milwaukee, Wisconsin
"East Newberry Boulevard is a 12-block street that connects Riverside and Lake parks. 'Newberry is one of Milwaukee's earliest boulevards, and remains today as perhaps its most gracious example within our 120-mile boulevard system,' Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said."
