Exam scholarships can smooth the path to certification
Don't let financial constraints prevent you from achieving a professional goal. The AICP Exam Fee Scholarship Program offers need-based assistance in the form of a steeply discounted exam fee. The program aims to increase diversity within AICP, and preference is given to members from underrepresented minority groups. At least one scholarship is awarded by each APA chapter.
Interested? Email your chapter Professional Development Officer by early February with a personal statement detailing your circumstances and, if applicable, how your AICP membership would help to diversify the AICP community. |
Tips for exam applicants
A complete job history is not required. Focus on providing specific experience that meets the minimum eligibility requirements.
Remember that tomorrow, December 7, is the early-bird deadline for the May 2018 exam. APA will accept applications for this exam through 5 p.m. (CT) December 28. |

Streamline your city's permitting and licensing in 2018
Permitting a business or residential project can be complex. OpenCounter streamlines the process by revealing where the project is allowed, which permits are required, and how much the permits will cost. This simplifies the process and saves time for applicants and staff. Learn more at www.opencounter.com. |
NATIONAL PLANNING CONFERENCE |
Great conferences begin with you
APA depends on members' input to present National Planning Conferences that offer planners the best and most relevant professional education. Important opportunities to contribute to both the NPC18 and NPC19 programs are coming up: |
NPC18 in New Orleans. Propose either a session about a planning issue that emerged or gained importance in response to recent events (e.g. natural disasters, legislative or court decisions, advances in technology) or a poster on a topic aligned with members' interests and NPC18 tracks and topics. The submission period for both is December 19–January 10.
NPC19 in San Francisco. In next week's Interact, APA will invite you to share your opinions about and preferences for educational programs at NPC19. We hope you will take a few minutes to complete a short survey, which will be open December 13–January 5. |

POLICY AND ADVOCACY |
Tax reform heads to conference
This week Senate and House members will meet to reconcile differences between their tax reform bills. Historic tax credits, New Market Tax Credits, and Private Activity Bonds are among the planning issues still in play. APA Policy Director Jason Jordan explains how the bills differ and APA's stands on provisions with likely implications for local communities.
Take action to shape the debate. Share with your representatives how cuts to financing tools critical for planning could have unintended consequences for city governments. |
No progress on spending deal
Government funding for critical planning programs is set to expire on Friday. While GOP leaders have signaled their intent to avoid a government shutdown, little has been done to either finalize FY2018 spending or advance another stopgap bill. APA's Tess Hembree outlines the road ahead on appropriations, including Congressional actions we may see this week.
Follow APA's policy team on Twitter at @APAadvocates for moment-by-moment coverage of tax reform, appropriations, and more. |

New resource collection for environmental planning
Every jurisdiction has environmental features that are vulnerable to development. Losing these areas deprives communities of valuable natural resources and increases risk from natural hazards. For your next environmental planning project, turn to APA's new Research KnowledgeBase collection on Environmentally Sensitive Areas for background, policy guidance, and examples of state and local regulations and programs that safeguard these critical lands. |
