Take the Planning Home member survey

APA wants to better understand the housing affordability issues — like availability, preservation, production, and quality — that matter most in your community. Your responses to the brief (10-minute) Planning Home member survey will help APA develop tools and resources to address housing issues, engage effectively in today's challenging housing debate, and support the work of planners. Take the survey by Wednesday, August 15.

POLICY AND ADVOCACY
Bowen speaks up for a pro-planning Farm Bill

Today, APA President Cynthia Bowen, FAICP, sent a message to 56 House and Senate Farm Bill conferees that identifies and argues for proposed provisions that advance local planning efforts. Overall, the Senate bill is substantially better for planning, but APA is working on your behalf to ensure that all proposals that improve food system planning, expand access to healthy food, improve rural economies, and protect vital agricultural land and environmental resources are included in the final legislation.

While the conference committee will not formally meet until early September, congressional staff already are reconciling differences between the House and Senate versions. Please speak out now and help us meet our goal of 100 calls to Congress this month. Tell your elected officials to support the Senate version of the Farm Bill. After your call, inform APA Public Affairs Manager Emily Pasi.

Planning in Urban Renewal

Viewed through today's lens, the legacy of urban renewal is mostly negative. But how did planners view these programs when they were launched? In 1957, this historic PAS report offered a practicing planner's perspective on the opportunities and potential pitfalls of urban renewal programs. Bonus reprint: a contemporaneous speech given by a Ford Motor Company official on why industry should value community planning.
OPPORTUNITIES
Scenario planning

The Consortium for Scenario Planning — an initiative of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy — hosts its annual conference September 12–14 in Columbus, Ohio. Activities include an opening reception, scenario planning panel sessions, and an informal "unconference" segment.
