What is a feminist city? Who is a feminist city for? How do different groups of people experience the city? And what does all this mean in a world gripped by COVID-19? Author Leslie Kern comes on the People Behind the Plans podcast series to discuss these questions with host Courtney Kashima, AICP. The two explore the myriad challenges women face living in and navigating spaces largely built for and by men, and they close their discussion by sharing tips for planners looking to increase gender equity in their communities.

New Research KnowledgeBase
Artificial intelligence and planning

Artificial intelligence is the study and application of computer algorithms that mimic human decision-making. So far, relatively few planners routinely apply AI to their work, but it has tremendous potential to shape communities and, perhaps, transform the planning profession. This new Research KnowledgeBase collection offers resources providing background or policy guidance on the effects of artificial intelligence on communities and the practice of planning.

Podcast
Preparing for emerging transportation systems

By 2028, urban air mobility is likely to be a commercially viable market for air metro services in the U.S. In this podcast episode, APA research director Petra Hurtado talks with Heather Sauceda Hannon, AICP, of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and Ric Stephens of NV5 about why it is so important for planners to prepare for this emerging transportation system.

Why planners are hopeful about the Biden Administration's climate agenda

In recent years, local governments have been leading the charge on climate action, but now they're getting some federal help. Here's what's happened so far — and what still needs to be done — as the administration aims for net zero emissions.

Environmental Justice
Generations of injustice

A Detroit neighborhood continues to suffer from a century of land-use decisions that put economic development before public health. See what has happened with housing closest to the refinery since Planning originally covered this story last October.

Plus: A new climate change executive order takes steps to protect disadvantaged communities disproportionately affected by climate impacts. The Justice40 Initiative is one example of how the Biden Administration is prioritizing environmental justice across the federal government.

New funding opportunity: Return of congressional earmarks

The return of earmarks gives planners a new pathway for funding critical projects. But the timeline is short — transportation projects must be submitted by members of Congress to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee by April 16. Read more about what you need to know to secure federal support.
