London Study Tour: Day by Day

Pre-tour option on Saturday and Sunday

  • London Open Garden Squares Weekend, organized by London Parks & Garden Trust. Visit the private parks and squares that are open to the public for only one weekend each year.


  • Tour begins in late afternoon with a walking tour of central London.
  • Welcome Dinner (APA to provide).


  • Meeting with the UK's Chief Planner: presentations on UK–based planning projects and initiatives.
  • Lunch briefing by head planners at Royal Town Planning Institute (RPTI).
  • Thames River Walk and urban walk of new office development in central London.
  • Dinner (on own but APA will provide suggestions).


  • Walk along Regent's Canal/Regent's Park.
  • Olympic Legacy Briefing and Tour. Learn about the planning process behind the 2012 Summer Olympics and the creative ways in which London has integrated Olympic venues, parks, and public spaces into the city's present and future development plans.
  • Networking event and reception with RPTI London Chapter. Get to know your British counterparts!


  • Meetings with legislators and decision makers from government agencies. Learn about and discuss preservation and planning issues facing London.
  • Cross Rail Project Briefing and Tour. Learn about the largest current infrastructure project in Europe, dedicated to improving public transit across London.
  • Dinner (APA to provide).


  • Walking tour of Kings Cross Development. Tour one of the largest current redevelopment projects in Europe.
  • Tour of Siemen's Urban Sustainability Centre, Docklands. Experience the world's largest exhibition on urban sustainability and the future of cities.
  • Thames Flood Barrier. Visit the world's second largest movable flood barrier and learn how it protects the Greater London metropolitan area. 
  • Dinner (on own but APA will provide suggestions).

Friday Morning

  • Neighborhood walking tour: Belgravia to Knightsbridge to Kensington to Notting Hill.
