The City of Ames is a thriving community looking for an experienced Planner interested in long range planning, zoning issues, and development review. The City of Ames has recently undertaken projects for significant infill redevelopment, growth area expansions, and long term corridor planning for Lincoln Way. The City has continued needs for work on additional planning studies and implementation.
The City of Ames Planning Division is currently seeking Planner candidates who have broad experience with long range and current planning activities for cities. This position will have the opportunities to work on diverse assignments that include development review and long range planning initiatives. Experience understanding site development and architectural plans, communicating design review and urban design interests, conducting data analysis with GIS, and an understanding of topical planning issues affecting a growing university community are highly desirable.
This Planner will be a team member of the Planning Division and work under general supervision of the Planning Director. Our planners work independently to implement the City's development standards, including: zoning, subdivision, and other regulations, the City's Comprehensive Plan, and administration of neighborhood programs. The successful candidate will have a wide range of responsibilities that include: working directly with customers on development permitting, code compliance, and inquiries; long-range planning of comprehensive planning, research, and policy development; and representation of the City with neighborhood or other interest groups.

- Bachelor's degree in planning, geography or closely related field, and four years experience in private or municipal government planning office.
- Valid Iowa driver's license
- Must be able to attend various assigned evening meetings such as Planning & Zoning Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustments, etc.
