The City of Laramie is seeking to fill two positions within the Planning division, between the range of Associate Planner and Principal Planner. Ideal candidates will be highly motivated professionals eager to put their skills to work in a dynamic, progressive community that offers a wide array of planning related opportunities. Within the City of Laramie, all planners coordinate project review and receive hands-on experience in almost all application types and submittals received for current and long-range planning projects. A less experienced planner will have opportunities to practice almost all the planning field has to offer. A more experienced planner will have opportunities to manage complex projects. Successful candidates will have vision, technical planning competence, the ability to navigate political issues, and skills in writing and speaking.
Laramie Community: “Gem City of the Plains” is in southeast Wyoming, 45 miles from the state capital of Cheyenne and 130 miles from Denver, Colorado. There is easy access to hundreds of nearby outdoor recreation opportunities. In the summer, local cars are packed with camping gear and canoes; in the fall,” Laramites” tote hunting supplies; and in the winter, skis reign. As Wyoming’s cycling capital, bikes fill the streets year-round despite seemingly prohibitive weather. Laramie is also home to 88 professional artists, 296 art students, seven visual arts organizations, three theatre companies, and two visual arts agencies—all engaging the economy. This makes Laramie Wyoming’s cultural capital as well! The nickname “Laradise,” established in the 1880’s, says it all. Laramie was founded with the expansion of the transcontinental railroad but, as home to three institutions of higher education (the University of Wyoming, Albany County Campus of the Laramie County Community College, and WyoTech) the local economy has traditionally be rooted in academia. Recently, through a concerted effort by the City of Laramie, State of Wyoming, and local economic development partners, Laramie is also enjoying a surgency in its tech and advanced manufacturing sectors.
The City of Laramie Planning Division: Laramie has a population of approximately 31,000 people and is managed by a City Manager. The Planning division, which consists of four full-time employees and serves as liaisons to a 7-member Planning Commission and a 9-member City Council, is organized under the City Manager’s Office. The Planning division aims to manage development within the community, recognizing economic progress while understanding that preservation of quality of life is of high importance.
