Senior Planner (Current or Neighborhood Focus Areas)

Currently have two openings, one for current planning and one for neighborhood planning.

Performs advanced professional and technical planning assignments. Has supervisory responsibilities for Planner 2's, Planner 1's and Planning Tech's.

  • Assists in administration of all planning-related ordinances.
  • Reviews case proposals for conformance with ordinances and regulations and prepares staff reports and recommendations.
  • Interprets applicable state, county, and local codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Develops and maintains automated tracking systems, hard copy files and records.
  • Conducts field evaluations and assessments.
  • Manages site plan, zoning, and subdivision submittals.
  • Organizes and conducts meetings with staff and developers.
  • Works with other departments, groups, and individuals, both internal and external, in the development and application of long-range plans and studies.
  • Researches planning-related ordinances and assists in updates of said ordinances.
  • Manages personal schedule, workload, and priorities as well as schedules of subordinate planners.
  • Performs a variety of work in functional areas of current and long-range planning and assists in interpretation and implementation of zoning, subdivision, and other regulations.
  • Compiles, analyzes, and interprets data, and writes reports that require little editing.
  • Assists in implementation of goals, objectives, and policies contained with adopted plans.
  • Assists in the review of zoning and land use requests in target neighborhoods, and prepares staff reports and recommendations
  • Manages components of the Comprehensive Plan and related activities. Assists in implementation of goals, objectives, and policies contained within adopted plans.
  • Creates annual population studies and works with demographic information.
  • Works with and provides technical information to developers, builders, surveyors, engineers, and the general public regarding matters related to zoning, subdivision and other current planning matters.
  • Attends and facilitates public meetings and workshops, many of which occur in the evening.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree in planning, GIS, architecture, or related field. A minimum of five years of planning experience is preferred. A Master's Degree in a related field can substitute for two years of experience. GIS Certificate preferred. GIS software experience required. AICP certification required or obtained within one year of date of hire is preferred. Valid Texas Driver's License required.

Amarillo currently has openings for both Current and Neighborhood Senior Planner Roles, and more defined job responsibilities would depend on the position. Please indicate in your application, which you prefer or feel most qualified.

The following additional requirements apply to all Planning and Development Services positions:

  • Must display effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public.
  • Familiarity with office type software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or similar programs).
  • Familiar with engineering and architectural terminology is preferred.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of engineering and architectural scales.
  • Ability to operate highly technical computer applications, such as GIS or CAD.
  • Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephones systems.
  • Knowledge of the fundamental principles, concepts and practices of city planning.
  • Ability to conduct and summarize research, and review/understand technical documents.
  • Knowledge of ability to use Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Google and Sketch-Up for creating materials.
  • Group facilitation skills for use with community workshops.
  • Group facilitation skills for use with community workshops.
  • Skilled in researching, analyzing, generating data and formulating conclusions related to urban planning and/or community development.
  • Skilled in overseeing group projects as well as simultaneously managing personal workload.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask, perform advanced analysis, and verbally or in writing convey complex information to a variety of audiences.
