The City of Topeka (population 127,000) is looking for a collegial planner to join our Planning Department team to build upon many recent accomplishments which include our award-winning Land Use and Growth Management Plan, Bikeways and Pedestrian Master Plans, Neighborhood Conservation Districts, and Non-Residential Building Design Standards. Topeka is the Capital of the State of Kansas rich with history, diverse neighborhoods, and economic momentum including a major public/private partnership for the revitalization of Topeka’s historic Downtown.
We are currently seeking a neighborhood planner in the Comprehensive Planning section responsible for developing and updating Comprehensive Plan elements including detailed professional neighborhood/area plans and the City’s Land Use and Growth Management Plan. The position will be the City’s lead planner to carry on our strong neighborhood planning tradition which involves extensive collaboration with citizens and staff from initial plan development to plan implementation. They will work closely with the City’s SORT program to prioritize infrastructure and housing funds for neighborhoods.
The position is also responsible for tracking, analyzing, and presenting metrics for census, demographic, building permit, housing, subdivision, and neighborhood performance including our long-standing Neighborhood Health Maps and new Development and Growth Management reports presented to City Council. Other duties include managing the City’s updated Neighborhood Revitalization Program for tax rebates, ensuring compliance with Neighborhood Conservation District design standards, and responding to public zoning inquiries as needed.
Position requirements: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in Urban Planning or a related field and a Master’s Degree in Urban Planning. (Four years of experience in municipal planning may be substituted for the Master’s Degree requirement.)
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and city insurable driving record must have Kansas driver’s license within six (6) months of hire date.
$20.43 to $25.15 per hour depending on qualifications.
