Benchmark Planning is seeking a highly motivated early-career urban design and planning professional to join our dynamic national planning practice in Charlotte. The ideal candidate for this position will have a combination of strong technical design skills and the ability to develop and translate their creative talents into innovative urban design solutions. Experience with public engagement, in a variety of forms, is also critical to this position, as the Urban Designer is expected to assist with leading creative and interactive design workshops and help to present plans to our clients. While this position is primarily oriented to our Urban Design practice, you will also have the opportunity to support a wide range of planning projects as you contribute to our team. General Responsibilities

  • Preparing the design elements of downtown / small area plans in collaboration with the Director of Urban Design
  • Drafting high quality graphics and illustrations for public presentation and inclusion in plan documents
  • Providing technical assistance and advice to the planning team on urban design concepts
  • Helping to organize, develop, and lead design workshops
  • Developing programs for the implementation of urban design concepts
  • Preparing ordinance sections related to urban design elements
  • Assisting with general planning projects, as needed
  • Assisting with preparing proposals and statements of qualifications
  • Public outreach and engagement
  • Please note that travel, including overnight travel, is required for this position

Desired Experience, Skills and Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in planning, urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, or a related field
  • 4 years of professional design / planning experience
  • A strong portfolio of independently produced urban design products
  • Proficiency with the Adobe Creative Suite, ArcGIS, CAD, and 3D design programs
  • Strong public speaking and presentation abilities
  • The ability to clearly communicate complex ideas in written and graphic form
  • Experience with web design, social media marketing, and branding
  • AICP certification is desired, but not required for professionals who maintain licensure in other fields (Landscape Architecture, Architecture, etc.)

Compensation and Benefits

  • The hiring range for this position is up to $60,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
