Hazards Planning Research Center

Social Equity in Disaster Policy

Hurricane Katrina brought to light as forcefully as any disaster in modern times the need for planners to recognize that such events weigh disproportionately upon the poor, the elderly, minorities, and the disabled.

The Hazards Planning Research Center seeks to address these issues within the larger context of planning for hazard mitigation and disaster recovery, ensuring that planning addresses needs for adequate affordable housing that incorporates effective mitigation, evacuation for those without private transportation, and economic recovery approaches that address the needs of those displaced from jobs.
