BRIEF: Tupelo closes recycling site, improves another
Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (Tupelo), 2014-02-20
Feb. 20--TUPELO -- Tupelo will end drop-off recycling in west Tupelo on Feb. 27 but plans to expand and improve the remaining downtown location.
The city will close the location at the northeast intersection of West Main Street and Coley Road due to potential safety concerns, said Sherrie Cochran, Tupelo's environmental planner.
The current drop-off site is at Fire Station No. 6, which has city officials concerned a fire truck could be blocked in during an emergency.
"Potentially, it's not a good situation," Cochran said.
However, the remaining recycling drop-off location at 338 Commerce St. will likely be upgraded.
Improvements will include paving the gravel area and increasing recycling pickup to weekly instead of once every two weeks.
That downtown location also will double the number of existing recycling bins to 10.
Recycling materials accepted at the site are newspaper, cardboard, aluminum and steel cans and No. 1 and No. 2 plastic bottles.
