Londonderry planners OK travel center plan
Derry News, The (NH), 2014-02-20
Feb. 20--LONDONDERRY -- A plan to bring a travel center to Rockingham Road came before the Planning Board last week and officials liked what they heard.
That site, the Sunoco station off Exit 5 on Interstate 93 near Liberty Drive, could someday be a travel plaza that would include a 15,080-square-foot building and gas pumps.
The building would house a convenience store, retail area and a small restaurant.
Jeffrey Merritt, project engineer for Bedford-based Keach-Nordstrom Associates, and property owner Floyd Hayes came before the board to give updates on what they want to do with the former Sunoco site.
The plan calls for a demolition of the present 1,800-square-foot building to make way for a travel plaza design. It would combine that property with two adjacent parcels, also owned by Hayes.
The building's design would be an ell-shaped, stucco-style structure that would incorporate the existing canopy that is required by the Sunoco company.
Six existing gas pumps and four diesel pumps would remain as part of the new plan.
Additional parking would bring space for trucks, and customer parking.
The design also includes improvements to the road and signal improvements in that area to accommodate upgrades to the property's entrance, Merritt said.
Lighting plans include parking lot lights and sconces on the main building. All lights would be LED types. The facility would be a 24-hour operation.
Hayes told the commission he wants to create a nice building with all businesses located there working together. He also wants to follow the town's master plan and would modify his plaza's look with different materials or siding, if requested.
Planning Board members all agreed they liked the plan.
"I love the plan," Maria Newman said. "I'm all for it."
Planning Board Chairman Art Rugg called the plan "very nice and very pleasant."
