Buzzard Point Alternative Futures: Final Recommendations
Community Planning Assistance Team Report
Buzzard Point is an area located in Southwest Washington, DC bordering the north side of the Anacostia River just west of the point of confluence of the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers. The Buzzard Point project was initiated at the request of D.C. Councilmember Tommy Wells (Ward 6) who reached out to APA and the CPAT program. Several major physical changes are in the works that may have powerful implications for the future of Buzzard Point. CPAT interviewed over 40 stakeholder groups during the visioning process.
The team's report does not propose a single vision for the future of Buzzard Point. There were too many constraints, too many unknowns, and too much uncertainty to present a single direction. Many of the recommendations in the report, however, shaped later plans that now guide the area's rapid-paced development. The team spoke strongly about preserving existing affordable housing. It identified opportunities to reconnect residents to the waterfront and link the neighborhood effectively to adjacent areas, among other ideas to explore.
