MW4. Richardson and Plano Transit Oriented Development

Thursday, October 16, 2014, 2:00pmThe cities of Richardson and Plano have promoted transit-oriented development at their DART LRT stations, but each city has faced different opportunities and challenges. This mobile workshop will examine three stations along DART’s northern Red Line. Galatyn Park and the Bush Turnpike stations in Richardson are both greenfield projects located in prime employment and mixed-use environments. Richardson has successfully partnered with commercial developers to master plan and created large scale mixed-use development with a strong civic presence. In contrast, transit-oriented development in Downtown Plano, the city’s original commercial and civic center, has focused on urban-density mixed-use redevelopment and infill projects woven into the fabric of a small historic downtown. Partnerships between the city, developers, small business owners and surrounding neighborhoods have resulted in a vibrant and revitalized urban center. The workshop will examine the use of planning, regulation and economic incentives used by the two cities, the results, problems encountered and lessons learned.
