  • Examine the catalysts in the transformation which lead to the creation of 3,000 housing units in the span of just over a decade.
  • Understand how to leverage private development to create public benefits including affordable housing, public infrastructure, parks and waterfront access created through a comprehensive planning process.
  • Study the significance of a community engagement process and the significance of creating a balanced vision for the future as new development interacts with the existing neighborhoods.

MORE SESSION DETAILS

Faced with loss of anchor industries and large-scale utilities, Stamford, Connecticut, capitalized on its proximity to New York City and connectivity with rail to turn the industrial wasteland into two planned developments, Yale & Town and Harbor Point. Fifteen years and 3,000 apartments later, planners working in the South End discuss the successes, challenges and the future vision for the neighborhood. The issues of affordable housing, historic preservation, and community infrastructure are at the forefront as the new meets the old.
