WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
- What economic factors are leading to the failure of golf courses and how this failure impacts open-space and recreational opportunities
- Examples of repurposing failed golf courses, while retaining green space and lessening impacts to abutting residential properties
- Proactive approaches to deal with failed (or failing) golf courses through the development of policy and zoning regulations
MORE SESSION DETAILS
More than 800 golf courses have closed in the United States since 2006, and the number of active players is at its lowest point since the mid-1980s. With golf courses as the centerpiece of many residential developments, communities are struggling to deal with the loss of open space and recreational amenities, and ways to repurpose failed courses. Examine the economic and societal trends behind the closure of golf courses, the challenges of maintaining failed courses, ways to redevelop existing courses, and the adoption of policies and development standards that address the conversion of existing golf courses while retaining open space.
