LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Understand the Tenderloin neighborhood and appreciate its unique history and role in San Francisco today.
  • Explore how displacement and rising rents define housing and economic development policies and politics, drawing from the work of city agencies, community advocates, nonprofit housing and private developers.
  • Learn about multiple strategies and programs to prevent displacement, how they played out, and how to apply these tools to increase housing affordability while stabilizing communities at risk of displacement.

MORE SESSION DETAILS

In the heart of San Francisco, the Tenderloin neighborhood has long been an affordable refuge for vulnerable populations. Until recently, the neighborhood was resistant to the city’s affordability crisis. With limited affordable housing and adjacent to tech jobs, the Tenderloin has become an attractive place to move.

City agencies, community organizations and residents, and developers are working, sometimes in support and sometimes in opposition, to balance often conflicting priorities.

Tour the neighborhood and learn about its history, recent housing and economic development projects, affordable housing solutions and challenges. Also hear about defining 1980s affordable housing protection strategies, and emerging tangible policy solutions.
