Delve into the creative steps that municipalities have taken to make better places through public realm improvements. These measures make places safer, more comfortable and interesting, and generally more attractive to pedestrians. The methods covered include rapid implementation of priority improvements, demonstration projects, effective community outreach, and creative funding mechanisms for implementation and maintenance.

Using examples from San Francisco; New York City; Jersey City, New Jersey; and Nyack, New York; speakers involved in the management of these projects illustrate how specific improvements were conceptualized and implemented in a variety of place types. The examples cover a land-use and zoning update that included a detailed public realm plan for implementation by private sponsors; a plaza equity program to bring improvements to underserved parts of the city; a pedestrian enhancement plan that utilized creative public engagement to identify priority locations and rapidly implement improvements; and a multi-jurisdictional suburban bicycle and pedestrian plan that made strategic network and safety improvements while fostering as sense of place in the downtown.

Learn about specific improvements, including physical interventions such as curb extensions, parklets, and public plazas, as well as regulatory, programmatic, and policy changes that support these improvements.
