JOB DESCRIPTION

The Municipal Planner-I performs entry level planning work by performing research, reviewing and evaluating site plans, interpret ordinances, providing legal descriptions of property, assisting in the analysis and proposal of plans, programs and projects, and provides technical support, information and guidance on planning issues.
The Municipal Planner-I is differentiated from Planner-II and Planner-III positions by the assignment of entry-level and less complex planning work.

The Municipal Planner-I

  • Education / higher education: Bachelor's Degree. For required college degrees, applicable field(s) of study: Geography, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Business or Public administration or Transportation, Urban or Regional Planning or Design or related field.
  • Minimum number of years of directly related experience: In lieu of a degree incumbent must possess four years of relevant experience.
  • Education and/or experience preferences: None

The Municipal Planner-IIperforms a variety of professional level work involving technical research and analysis on planning issues and initiatives and reporting of social, economic and engineering data for use in current and long-range planning; and provides information and assistance on planning related matters to the public and other department staff.
A Planner-II is differentiated from a Planner-I by the assignment of professional level planning duties of moderate difficulty.

  • Education / higher education: Bachelor's Degree. For required college degrees, applicable field(s) of study: Geography, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Business or Public administration or Transportation, Urban or Regional Planning or Design or related field.
  • Minimum number of years of directly related experience: Two years of municipal planning experience. In lieu of a degree incumbent must possess six years of relevant experience.
  • Required certifications, licenses or registrations: none
  • Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: AICP

The Municipal Planner-III participates in and reviews complex planning projects which require considerable skill in research, analysis, and presentation of data, and performs very difficult and complex planning functions involving conservation and environmental protection and enhancement, the zoning ordinance, land divisions, right-of-way, native plant and planning stipulations in the Development Services Department. The Municipal Planner-III may supervise other Planners or Administrative Staff depending on assignment.

  • Education / higher education: Bachelor's Degree. For required college degrees, applicable field(s) of study: Geography, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Business or Public Administration or Transportation, Urban or Regional Planning or Design or related field.
  • Minimum number of years of directly related experience: Four years' experience in planning, two of which must have been in a local government setting. In lieu of a degree incumbent must possess 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Education and/or experience preferences: At least two years in a mid-level or higher position. One year supervisory experience. Master's Degree in the above mentioned disciplines.
  • Required certifications, licenses or registrations: AICP Certification.
