During David W. Woods’s planning career, he has worked across the nation to help communities become more beautiful, sustainable, and equitable places. With a focus on long-term planning and collaboration, he achieved near-term success and also laid a foundation for future generations by incorporating what people want and need through use of national best practices. Citizens and fellow planners have called his love for the planning profession contagious. His passion for the profession is evident in his work and his legacy will be to make great places that are open and inclusive and diverse.
David W. Woods, PhD, FAICP has dedicated a 30-year career to building the culture and constituency for planning, especially to the next generation of future planners. He takes seriously the importance of sharing planning knowledge to future generations regardless if the student becomes a planner, they will leave the class understanding the core values and principles of professional planning, which will improve the quality of communities in public life in the future. David has served an extraordinarily diverse array of strong clients and local government a public and private-sector planning professional providing intelligent and responsive leadership that effects change through developing innovative tools for citizen involvement and empowerment. Directors (2006-2010) David Woods has been on the national APA, ACSP, Division, and local chapter speakers circuit for a many years, owing to his breadth of experience, his selection of topics, and to his planning knowledge and bringing theory to practice. In addition, David widely-cited, service-based research on innovative citizen participation models, resiliency, affective planning advocacy, and using planning values and principles of professional practice in Seattle and the Puget Sound Region, urban and suburban Connecticut and Long Island, and post-Sandy New York has led him and others to develop educational programs and publications that help other planners gain effectiveness in this increasingly important field. David book Democracy Deferred: Civic Leadership after 9/11 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012).
David W. Woods, has over thirty years of planning leadership experience as a public servant, non-profit organization leader, and consultant in private practice in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey, and other parts of the country. From 2013 to 2021, David has directed the long-range planning division and served as the Deputy Director of Planning for the City of Stamford. In 2022, David returned to the private sector to serve as Principal, Executive Vice President of GreenWoods Associates. David is also a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners, one of the planning professions highest honors.
