Souly Austin: Austin’s Economic Planning Initiative

Austin, Texas

A Place-Based Initiative

Strengthening Communication and Sense of place for Each District

As rapid growth and development continue in Austin, Texas, the landscapes of its commercial corridors and business areas require more attention. The city needed an authentic, adaptive, and grassroots way to educate, engage, and empower the business community.

Place-based economic development program Souly Austin created six distinct merchant associations to open a continuous dialogue between community stakeholders and the City of Austin. Each business district is recognized as a culturally rich and diverse community and is provided with a flexible set of tools to meet each district's individual needs.

The program encourages communication of businesses within the district, allowing the city to be proactive in supporting the collective voice of the community and importantly help preserve the unique character and economic assets these areas bring to Austin.

Souly Austin is the recipient of a 2020 National Planning Achievement Award for Economic Development.
