Comprehensive Plan Update

City of Becker

Becker, MN

The City of Becker, Minnesota is seeking proposals from qualified, multi-disciplinary firms to participate in the planning process for the update of the City of Becker's Comprehensive Plan. The most recent Comprehensive Plan was completed in 2012 and much has changed since that time. The City intends to partner with a qualified consultant, or team of consultants, to join with City staff in updating the current City of Becker Comprehensive Plan.

Becker is located between the Elk and Mississippi Rivers along Minnesota Highway 10, approximately 19 miles southeast of St. Cloud and about 46 miles northwest of Minneapolis in Sherburne County, Minnesota. The City is approximately 50 minutes from the Minneapolis - St. Paul International Airport, 50 miles from the St. Paul Downtown Airport, and 20 minutes from the St. Cloud Regional Airport. Becker is home to a population of 4,538 people, according to the 2010 Census. Highway 10 runs adjacent to the frontage road of Becker directly past a large commercial and industrial corridor. The highway is a major corridor for travel to the "north woods" ( ie., Brainard, etc.) and brings a large amount of traffic to and through Becker during the year which boosts local and industrial business.

Additionally, the City is in close proximity to Interstate 94 providing fast and easy transit to both the Twin Cities and St. Cloud. Residents of Becker can enjoy the feel of small town living while also being close to metropolitan areas that provide extended opportunities for entertainment and cultural events. In addition to excellent schools, the City also owns and operates a 27-hole championship golf course and is home to a large business park. The business park contains many companies that employ residents of the City, including a large, 3 unit, coal fired power plant (Sherco, owned and operated by Xcel Energy with a planned decommission), Northern Metals Recycling (currently under construction), Liberty Paper, Inc., and many other manufacturing and industrial jobs including trucking, CNC milling and others. There has been increased interest in the large tracts of land, surrounding the Sherco Power Plant, that are industrially zoned presenting opportunities for increased growth of the City's population and economy.

Many of Becker's residents know and work with each other and the community has a small-town, tight-knit feel to which people are drawn. There are a number of recreational opportunities in and surrounding the City, from Snuffy's landing, a park right along the Mississippi River that provides fishing, boating, and other activities, to a wide variety of parks, trails and bike paths, to the Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge.
