The Rhode Island State House was designed by the renowned New York architecture firm of McKim, Mead & White, between 1891 and 1894, in the American Renaissance Style. It was constructed between 1895 and 1904 on a prominent hillside at the border of downtown Providence. The approximately sixteen-acre site features formal terraced grounds, parking areas and an auxiliary building (power plant). The building has the fourth-largest self-supporting marble dome in the world, and it houses numerous works of art, monuments, and memorials of significant historic value, including the original Rhode Island charter granted by King Charles II in 1663. As the seat of public government in Rhode Island, the State House holds the Offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, General Treasurer, Legislative and Executive branches, the State Library, support spaces for these functions, and major ceremonial areas.

This comprehensive visioning effort includes developing the scope of participation for stakeholders and public input, developing and utilizing specific information management tools and communications to engage, inform and excite stakeholders and the public, scheduling, facilitating, and documenting all meetings, and compiling, analyzing and synthesizing information to culminate in a well-developed, facilitated shared Mission Statement and Strategic Vision for the Rhode Island State House moving forward, and the derived goals and objectives.
