Transit Development Plan
Transit Authority of Northern KY
Ft Wright, KY
The Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky (TANK) is the public transportation system that provides service to Boone, Campbell, and Kenton Counties in Northern Kentucky as well as in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. TANK employs approximately 280 employees in a union environment. TANK provides fixed-route transportation services on 16 routes with 87 city-type transit buses and 8 trolley buses (operating approximately 4,000 weekly hours of service and 54,000 weekly miles of service), paratransit services with approximately 33 cutaway type vehicles, and a microtransit on-demand pilot program in Campbell County that runs on weekdays with 2 cutaway vehicles.
TANK is at a cross-roads. The agency conducted a full scale redesign in 2019, which gave recommendations for the system and network. The first round of implementation of the redesign went into effect in March 2020, the same month that massive community shutdowns were put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since that time, TANK has experienced funding issues, severely reduced ridership and operator hiring challenges. The agency faces similar challenges to those faced in many transit agencies throughout the country: costs are rising, the world changed, and the agency has not been able to change with it.
The TANK Board and funding counties are calling us to be bold in a new approach to transit in our region. This plan will help the agency work through a new vision for TANK. Through the planning process, we will gain community, stakeholder and business community feedback and expectations for the system and then will lay out a new vision for transforming TANK service, with specific and measurable goals and timelines.
Proposals are due by 2:00PM on May 13, 2025.
