POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Planning Department has openings for four (4) 5278 Planner II positions in our Current Planning Division to perform professional planning work to support the operations and functions of the Department. Planners in the Current Planning Division are responsible for reviewing building permit and land use entitlement applications for compliance with the San Francisco Planning Code, San Francisco's General Plan, zoning regulations, historic preservation, and relevant design guidelines.

Under general supervision, the 5278 Planner II performs difficult city planning work and participates in all phases of city planning.

Three of the 5278 Planner II positions will include, but not be limited to, the following responsibilities:

  • Processing discretionary building permits and land use applications within a specific geographic area of the City;
  • Processing ministerial and discretionary Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) building permit applications, in compliance with State and local ADU laws;
  • Reviewing building permits and land use applications for compliance with the General Plan, Planning Code, the Residential Design Guidelines, CEQA, and other relevant urban design policies;
  • Staffing the public information counter and making presentations at public hearings.
  • These positions require someone who has strong plan-review skills, is highly organized, works effectively with others, can successfully prioritize competing deadlines, thinks critically, knows when to use independent judgment, and possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills to work effectively within a multi-cultural workforce serving diverse constituents.

One of the 5278 Planner II positions will include, but not be limited to, the following responsibilities:

  • Supporting the Department's Citywide Cultural Resources Survey;
  • Authoring and managing consultants in the preparation of historic cultural context statements;
  • Conducting in-field surveys of cultural resources;
  • Participating in the cultural resource evaluation process;
  • Researching and drafting Historic Resource Assessments.

This position requires someone who has strong research skills, is highly organized, works effectively with others, can successfully prioritize competing deadlines, thinks critically, knows when to use independent judgment, and possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills to work effectively within a multi-cultural workforce serving diverse constituents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university AND two (2) years (4,000 hours) verifiable full-time-equivalent experience in city, regional, urban or transportation planning, urban design, historic preservation, architectural or environmental Review or other related field;

OR

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in city, regional, or urban planning, or a closely related field such as architecture, landscape architecture, geography, urban studies, public administration, physical sciences, history, historic preservation, or environmental studies AND one (1) year (2,000 hours) verifiable full-time-equivalent experience in city, regional, urban or transportation planning, urban design, historic preservation, architectural or environmental review or other related field;

OR

  • Possession of a master's degree from an accredited college or university in city, regional, or urban planning, or a closely related field such as architecture, landscape architecture, geography, urban studies, public administration, physical sciences, history, historic preservation, or environmental studies.
