General Description

The purpose of this class within the organization is to provide technical, administrative, and planning related support for the Planning Department.

Essential Functions:

Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.

Inspects commercial and residential developments for compliance with submitted plans prior to issuance of a certificate of occupancy. Reviews preliminary and final plats, site plans, and architectural elevations for compliance with the City's Subdivision Regulations, Zoning Ordinance, and Design Guidelines. Assists customers in interpreting the Zoning Ordinance for his/her needs.

Prepares legal notices and notifies the public of public hearings for Planning Commission and City Council meetings regarding rezoning and annexation property. Researches and compiles information gathered from other departments to prepare an annexation study of property being requested for annexation. Researches and collects evidence of zoning violations and enforces Zoning Ordinance as needed, including sending out written notices of confirmed violations and appearing in City Court.

Places rezoning and annexation signs on property being proposed to be rezoned or annexed. Conducts special city-wide census to increase annual state shared taxes from the State. Answer phone calls from citizens with questions about zoning of property, zoning violations, and flood hazard areas. Composes zoning letters and other correspondence as requested by citizens.

Research various topics in Planning, including surveying practices of other communities, and draft reports for the review of the Planning Director. Make presentations to the City Council, Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Historic Zoning Commission, as needed.

Additional Duties:

Performs other work as assigned.

Physical Demands:

Work is typically performed standing, walking, and sitting; however, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing stairs, traversing rough and uneven terrain, and lifting objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds is required on an intermittent basis.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in relevant field of study required. Bachelor's or master's degree in Urban Planning or Public Administration preferred.

One (1) year of experience Urban Planning or Public Administration preferred.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Must have a valid driver's license.
