The Planner I is responsible for performing entry-level professional and paraprofessional assignments to provide staff support to the Community Development Department. The position assists with various aspects and phases of community development projects which include providing support in project research, supporting staff at various public meetings, performing demanding clerical duties and providing overall office support coordination. The position provides excellent customer service to internal and external customers on a daily basis. The nature of work is characterized by performance of advanced technical and administrative duties for which skill in comprehensive integration and coordination of several dissimilar administrative functions is required. Work is often project oriented involving full scope of activities and accountability from planning, initiation, execution and coordination to implementation and evaluation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Assists in the preparation of land use and zoning maps; processes applications for various land use applications
  • Assists in enforcing the Town's zoning, sign, subdivision and other ordinances; prepares reports to the Town Planning Commission and occasionally to Town Council; processes applications for zone changes, subdivisions, site plans, and conditional uses
  • Assist with site visits as needed
  • Answers questions and provides information to the public on planning and zoning matters
  • Assists with advanced planning revisions to the Comprehensive Plan, Land Use Code and other ordinances
  • Other duties may be assigned from time to time, this list is not meant to be all inclusive

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of personal computers - Proficient in use of personal computers and related software applications specifically: Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written)
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills
  • Knowledge of business terminology, spelling and punctuation
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups of individuals including supervisors, co-workers, and the public
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment as needed
  • Skilled in performing basic mathematical calculations
  • Ability to multi-task many variable duties and responsibilities
  • Skilled in handling frequent interruptions and exercise critical judgment
  • Ability to maintain professionalism in various situations
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret manuals, ordinances, written policies and procedures, statutes, rules, regulations, memos, letters, reports, and legal documents. As well as the ability to read maps
  • GIS knowledge desirable, but not required

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, Engineering or other professionally appropriate field
  • This position also requires one to three years' experience in a planning related position

Salary Range: $60,916 - $67,917, depending on qualifications and experience of selected candidate
