This position may be filled at the Planner I or Planner II level, depending on the candidate's experience and education. The position is responsible for essential duties associated with planning services for the County, focused on current development and transportation needs. This position is responsible for assisting with planning, zoning, subdivision, and general development, site plan review, and customer service. The position also provides oversight for the County's Locally Administered Transportation Programs through the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Rural Additions Program, and other transportation initiatives. The position acts as a liaison to the New River Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Roanoke Valley Alleghany Transportation Planning Organization. The Planner will also assist with the development of applications for transportation funding opportunities and will help to execute the transportation goals outlined in the County's Comprehensive Plan.
The position requires a Bachelor's degree in Planning, Urban Development, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field. Two years of experience in the planning field is preferred, but a combination of education, experience, and professional training may be considered in lieu of two years of experience. The ideal candidate should be organized, detail-oriented, and able to multitask with a high level of accuracy; have knowledge of law and government, including legal codes, regulations, and agency rules. Applicants should have a demonstrated ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, work seamlessly with team members and independently on tasks, enjoy assisting people, and have strong communication skills and excellent customer service skills. The selected candidate is expected to obtain the Locally Administered Projects Qualification through VDOT within 1 year of hire.
