The City of Fort Worth‒America's 11th largest city and one of its fastest-growing‒is seeking its first Chief Planning Officer. This executive role offers a rare opportunity to lead transformational, citywide planning in a vibrant urban environment of over 1 million residents.
About the Role
Reporting to the Assistant City Manager, the Chief Planning Officer will lead implementation of Fort Worth's updated Comprehensive Plan, align long-range strategies across departments, and champion initiatives that integrate infrastructure, housing, mobility, economic development, and environmental stewardship. Unlike traditional planning administration, this role focuses on strategic leadership‒coordinating citywide priorities, breaking down silos, and advancing Fort Worth's vision for sustainable, equitable growth.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and drive a long-term investment strategy that delivers measurable public benefit.
- Build collaboration across departments and partner agencies.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to City Council, leadership, and the community.
- Advance policies that connect land use, transportation, and environmental priorities.
- Foster a transparent, inclusive approach to city planning.
Ideal Candidate:
- Bachelor's degree in urban planning, public administration, or a related field (master's preferred)
- 7+ years of planning experience, including senior leadership roles
- Expertise in comprehensive planning and interdepartmental coordination
- Strong strategic, political, and communication skills
