JOB DESCRIPTION

The Town of Truckee is seeking an experienced and collaborative Assistant Town Manager to play a vital role in implementing the Town Council's priorities and advancing community-focused initiatives. Reporting directly to the Town Manager and serving as a key member of the Town's executive leadership team, the Assistant Town Manager may also oversee other executive team members, depending on the selected candidate's expertise.

Areas of oversight may include: economic development, housing, solid waste, sustainability, administrative services, clerking, records management, and the Town's Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Awareness (IDEA) program. This role will work closely with the Town Manager and Town Council to develop innovative programs, enhance customer service, and guide strategic planning and policy development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide operational oversight of day-to-day Town functions to ensure high-quality service delivery. Acting as the Town Manager when needed. Develops and advances the Town's legislative platform and represents the Town in high-level policy discussions. Participate in developing and managing interdisciplinary projects and programs, including the Town's operating and capital budgets. Representing the Town in engagements with governmental agencies, community groups, task forces, boards, and business organizations. Oversee Town Council agenda preparation, coordination, follow-up, and review of staff reports. Participate in labor negotiations with the Town's three employee groups. Oversee the 2-year Town Council Priorities Workplan and action items. They will bring a proven record of fostering strong relationships — both within the Town organization and with the broader community — and will excel at building trust through open, respectful, and transparent communication. Exceptional interpersonal skills are essential for working effectively with elected officials, regional and state leaders, partner agencies, staff, and community members. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in public administration, business administration, finance, political science, or a related field. At least seven (7) years of administrative and/or management experience in municipal government, including the development, evaluation, and recommendation of services and policies. A minimum of four (4) years in a management role.

BENEFITS:

The Town of Truckee offers a highly competitive compensation and benefits package. The annual salary range for the Assistant Town Manager is $188,697 – $254,741, with placement dependent on qualifications and experience. The Town maintains a pay-for-performance program, offering annual increases of up to 6%, and a performance bonus option for employees at the top of their salary range. Retirement CalPERS Pension – Classic Members: 2% at 55 with an 8% employee contribution; New Members: 2% at 62 with an 8.25% employee contribution. The Town does not participate in Social Security. Deferred Compensation contributions Health & Wellness Medical Insurance – CalPERS 90/10 PPO plan, fully paid for the employee and eligible dependents. Dental & Vision Insurance – Full coverage for the employee and eligible dependents. 1% contribution to Retirement Health Savings Paid Time Off 13 paid holidays plus two floating holidays. 80 hours of administrative leave annually. Vacation starts at two weeks per year, increasing with years of service. Sick leave accrues at 96 hours per year, with cash-out options. Additional Benefits Dependent Care and Medical Flexible Spending Accounts access (pre-tax contributions). Vehicle allowance up to $300/month. Life insurance, short-term disability, and long-term disability coverage. Access to supplemental insurance policies. Tuition reimbursement of up to $3,000 per fiscal year.
